Edit a character

To edit a primary, secondary, minor, or group profile, open it from the Characters list and update the profile sections on that character’s page. If you need to edit a micro character, use the separate section below.

Open the character

1. Open your story.
2. Open Characters.
3. Select the character you want to edit.

If you need help finding it, use the sidebar Display Settings to change Grouping, Sort By, or View Mode.

Update the profile

For primary, secondary, and minor characters, pages are built from template-based sections. Once inside a character profile page, you can change a character’s template in the Display Settings > Template dropdown.

The current template options are:

• Full (Primary), meant for characters who need an extensive profile.
• Focused (Secondary), meant for characters needing just enough details to build a dynamic character.
• Minimal (Minor), meant for tertiary background characters who serve a story purpose but aren’t necessarily fleshed out.

No matter the template option, you can:

• edit Name, Label, Story Role, Color, and Summary
• edit the template prompts and use the prompt tooltips for extra guidance to craft a unique, dynamic character
• add custom prompts or fields where available with the +Add buttons
• tag and review Relationships connections. Most of these linked relationships are reciprocal (A “parent” relationship link for one character will create a “child” relationship link for the other character.)
• review the Scenes section for scenes linked to that character

While in a profile page, be sure to adjust the sidebar Display Settings to your preference. Use the Fields toggle to switch between Show All, Hide Unused, which hides any blank (and unflagged) fields, and Hide Custom, which hides all of your custom-created fields.

Adjust what you see

If the current profile shows too much or too little potential detail, switch the character template.

Group Profiles have a different layout. They have sections for About, List (where you tag characters and describe their role in the group), and Notes. There is currently only one Group profile template.

To reduce visual clutter, use Fields to hide unused or custom prompts.

Edit a micro character

To edit a micro character, open Characters, set Display Settings to Grouping: Types, and use the Micro Character List at the bottom of the page to find the micro character you want.

Then select that character’s three-dot menu icon > Edit. The Edit Micro Character popup panel opens with only Name, Color, Label, Description, Groups, and Scenes.

Read-only cases

Free accounts can still edit character profiles within their limits. If a character is locked or the account has an inactive paid subscription, the character page is read-only. In that state, you can review the profile but you cannot edit it until editing access is restored.
