Add a character to your story bible

Create a character entry in your Novelio story bible and start building out the profile.

To add a character to your story bible, open the Characters portal and click the “Add New” button for the type of character you want to create. Use Display Settings to choose the right grouping and view to customize the way you browse and organize those characters.

Open Characters

  1. Open the story you want to work on.
  2. Open the Characters portal.

If you want to review the list a different way, the Display Settings toggles in the sidebar let you change the View Mode and Sort By settings.

Create a character by type

  1. In Display Settings, set Grouping to Types.
  2. Set View Mode to Card.
  3. Find the row for the character type you want to add.
  4. Select the matching new card, such as NEW PRIMARY in order to create a primary character.
  5. In the modal, enter their Name.
  6. Confirm by clicking the blue Create button, such as Create Primary Character.

Add a new character from a group

If you want to add a character from within a group, open Display Settings in the sidebar and switch Grouping to Groups first.

  1. Find the group row and select NEW MEMBER.
  2. Enter their Name.
  3. Choose Primary, Secondary, Minor, or Micro in Type.
  4. Confirm by clicking the blue Create button, which includes the group name.

Add a micro character

Micro characters don’t have a profile template and do not count toward subscription character limits. They appear as tags, and they do have a Name, a Label, and a short description. They can also be tagged into relationships and groups.

There is more than one way to create a micro character:

  • To add a standalone micro character, set the Grouping toggle in the Display Settings to Types. Scroll to the Micro Character List at the bottom of the page. Click the blue +Add Micro button.
  • To add a micro character from within a group, set the Grouping toggle to Groups. Click the blue New Member button for the group you want, then select Micro from the Type dropdown options.

What happens next

After you create a character or group, you can open that profile from within the Characters list whenever you’re ready to keep developing the profile. Micro Character details can also be edited from within their Micro Character list. See Edit a character.
