Supported Story Sync file types and upload limits

Story Sync supports these manuscript file types for narrative manuscripts:

• PDF
• Markdown .md
• plain text .txt

The upload size limit is 10MB per file.

Recommended format

Markdown is recommended for best results.

Markdown usually preserves chapter, act, and scene structure more clearly than other supported formats. It also preserves formatting such as italics, which can help with analysis and understanding.

Plain text is acceptable. PDF is supported, but it may introduce inaccuracies or errors. Elements like page headers, page numbers, and image captions can add noise to the scan, and names or other important words may be read incorrectly.

What happens if your file is not supported

If the file type is not supported, Story Sync will not accept the upload.

There are free online document converters such as Zamzar or Convertio that can convert a PDF, epub, or other file type into Markdown .md or plain text .txt.

If the file is over 10MB, the upload will also fail. PDFs with heavy imaging can easily reach over 10MB.

Common upload issues

Check these first:

• the file ends in .pdf, .md, or .txt
• the file size is under 10MB
• the file opens normally on your device

You can check a document’s size and type in your device’s file manager.

• On Mac: right-click the file and select Info.
• On Windows: right-click the file and select Properties.
• On Chromebook: right-click the file and select Get info.

Both .md and .txt files can be previewed in Chrome by dragging the file into a Google search homepage.
