Prepare your manuscript for Story Sync

Prepare the cleanest manuscript file you have before you upload it to Story Sync. Clear structure gives Story Sync better material to analyze.

Use Markdown when you can

Markdown .md is recommended for best results.

Markdown preserves structure like:

• acts
• chapter breaks
• scene breaks
• headings
• some formatting cues, such as italics.

Plain text .txt is acceptable. PDF is supported, but it may introduce inaccuracies or errors.

What to clean up before upload

Before you upload, make sure your manuscript file is as clean and readable as possible.

Helpful checks:

• keep chapter and scene breaks clear, using dedicated header formatting when possible.
• remove extra notes or stray text you do not want analyzed
• use one complete manuscript file when possible
• make sure the file is readable and not corrupted

Start with a fresh Story Sync story

Novelio recommends using Story Sync in a new, blank story file.

That gives you a clean place to review and apply Story Sync results for Characters, Worlds, and Plotting.

If your file is not in Markdown

You can still use plain text .txt or PDF.

Keep in mind:

• plain text is accepted, but may preserve less structure
• PDF is supported, but may be harder for Story Sync to interpret cleanly. Elements like page numbers, page headers, and image captions can add noise to the scan. Names and other important words may also be read incorrectly, which can lead to mistakes or misspellings in the results.

If you have a choice, upload Markdown.
